Food: Five places to enjoy breakfast in Mechelen

Credits: Cindy Van Dyck

The City of Mechelen has seen a tremendous growth in tourism in the last few years. But besides the tourists also locals are enjoying the delicious bars, restaurants and cozy places to go for breakfast. And as a proud resident of the city, our editor Cindy went out to discover for you the best breakfast spots. This is her top 5!

Your mornings set the tone for the day.

Lief, Vijfhoek

This small but super cozy breakfast and brunch bar was previously reviewed on Blogzine.be. We are still total fans of it and that’s why they deserve a spot in the article around breakfast in Mechelen. But what is so special about LIEF?

LIEF works together with merchants in the neighborhood, including a bakery, and serves you daily delicious and freshly made dishes. LIEF literally means “kind”. So be kind to your body and also to life!

Le Pain Quotidien, Ijzerenleen

Le Pain Quotidien is not unknown in Belgium and also in Mechelen you can sit down to a delicious cup of coffee and have breakfast. You can choose from their bakery products such as a twisted lemon with poppy seed pastry. Or choose for the classic croissant! Whatever you desire they have it. LPQ has also recently updated their breakfast menu. You can now even order a delicious chia pudding with dragonfruit: healthy, fresh and perfect to start the day!

Sister Bean, Vismarkt

As with the other hot spots, you can visit Sister Bean during the week for a hot drink and a good breakfast. But on weekends, they take a slightly more special approach, and they are totally known for it: their Sunday brunch.

For 25€ you can enjoy the breakfast buffet there. They have a mix of different breads, egg salad, jams, cheeses and cold cuts. And for those who want it even healthier you have a mix of guacamole, hummus, salads and even yogurt with fruit and granola. This brunch formula does not include drinks!

Foom, Sint-Katelijnestraat

Just next to St. Rombout’s Tower in Mechelen, you’ll find FOOM. They have been the proclaimed breakfast spot of Mechelen for many for years. You can go there for the classics like (oatmeal) pancakes, French toast and scones. But also toast with beet and feta, toast pumpkin with peppers or sweet potato hashbrowns are on the menu! And I must also say: their Latte Macchiato with almond milk there is delicious!

Kato Gateaux, Korenmarkt

The most recent breakfast and brunch spot I discovered is Kato Gateaux on the Korenmarkt. There was always a huge amount of positive feedback about this place, so I just had to try it. Their dishes are completely vegan but so delicious! I myself tried their lemon with rose petal cake, the Latte Macchiato (duh) and their toast with hummus of peppers with avocado and grilled zucchini. Overly delicious! I am totally a fan.

In addition to the dishes I tried, you can also find açai bowls, sweet potato waffles and cauliflower couscous. For those who love sweets, they also have coconut lime pie, speculoos cheesecake, bounty pie,… and yes! All Vegan!

Adress: Korenmarkt 11, 2800 Mechelen
