Covid one, covid two and possibly a covid three… The virus has seriously hit our lives, both privately and professionally. Brave and resilient as we are, we still keep it going, with all its consequences. Fear, despair and the urge for perspective are just a few of the emotions that have surfaced in recent months, which we find difficult to cope with.
Balance is not something you find, it’s something you create.
Taking a moment to slow down, to pausing your thoughts and to paying attention to your breathing, does miracles. Have you ever thought about this: The first thing we do independently when we are born, is to breathe. Without learning it, we immediately and automatically find the right rhythm to supply our lungs with air, allowing life to circulate through our body. By the way, did you know that we inhale about 20,000 to 30,000 times a day! Knowing how to breath correctly is therefore extremely important.
Why should you meditate?
– To learn to live in the ‘now’
– To let go of thoughts
– To concentrate better
– To become more productive
– To cope with negative feelings
So how do you go about doing that
Take the time to get into a comfortable position and close your eyes. Let your breathing be there, become aware of your in- and exhaling, of the air that flows in through your nose and escapes again quietly through your mouth, like a sigh.
Close your eyes and exhale for 1 second through your mouth. Then inhale also for 1 second through your nose. Next, exhale (through your mouth) for 2 seconds. And inhale for 2 seconds (through your nose) again. Continue like this, breathing in and out for 1 second longer each time. Try to get to two times 10 seconds the first few times, but don’t force anything. Through regular exercises, learn to master this progressive breathing, little by little.
