Travel: The Best Indoor Activities To Do in Santo Domingo

It doesn’t happen often, but it can rain very hard sometimes in the Dominican Republic. And that doesn’t have to be the end of your vacation at all. Today our editor Angelo would like to share with you his 6 favorite indoor activities in Santo Domingo.

Do anything, but let it produce joy.

The Dominican Republic has so much to offer. The most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean, the best excursions, delicious food and a rich culture. Sometimes the bad weather can throw a spanner in the works and then it seems like there’s nothing left to do. Luckily, you can abandon those thoughts from now on.

The Dominican Republic is also a fantastic place when it rains. Below is a list of my 6 most favorite activities on days when I can’t or don’t want to go to the beach. And the best part is, most of the activities are open 7 days a week. So you can always make last minute plans.

Go watch a movie in a Movie Theater

Ever since I was younger, I was enormously impressed by seeing movies on the big screen. Every time a new movie came out, I wanted to go see it right away.

Going to the movies in Santo Domingo is a lot more fun than in Belgium for many reasons. I mostly go to the Caribbean Cinemas theaters. The prices for seeing the same movies, is significantly lower; here you pay about 300 pesos (or 4.5 euros) per screening. That’s a third of the prices we know at home.

Also, the cinematic experience is better I think. There are many places where you can go to the movies, so you never have to queue up at a gigantic line. So going to the movies spontaneously is more than possible. The theaters are also smaller with less seats, but they are much more comfortable.

The choice of sweets and chips is a lot less than in our country. There are two or three types of chocolate, some candy, popcorn and nachos. But you can also get hot dogs and you can eat them during the movie. And all the prices are also a lot lower than at home.

Go on a Shopping spree

Santo Domingo has the most shopping centers I have ever seen in one city. Most of them are close together in Downtown and you can find stores like Zara, Bershka, Pull&Bear, Stradivarius, NYX Cosmetics. We spend the most of our shopping visits at Agora mall and Galeria 360 (smallest of the two but it has Starbucks).

Looking for more exclusive shops and collections? Then you should visit Blue Mall. There you will find stores like Louis Vuitton, Rolex, Bulgari, and many more.

Bring out your competitive self

If you like a good game of healthy competition, Sebelén Bowling & Entertainment offers the best rounds of bowling. This place can be busier than most other places in this list, though. So it is recommended of send in advance via Whatsapp (a lot happens through Whatsapp in the DR) and ask when there is space available.

Feel like a bit more excitement? Then you can also hop to the third floor for a go kart race and show who is the fastest. Or who isn’t!

Emerge yourself in a VR or Laser Shooting Game

Video games and laser shooting are wildly popular these days. In Santo Domingo you will find a lot of places where you can play some thrilling games for little money. Our recommendation is the amusement center in Sambil called “Laser Runner“.

Release all your energy in the Trampoline Park

In addition to the popular video and laser games in Sambil, the adjacent SUMMIT is also wildly popular. Here you will find an extensive range of trampolines on which you can try out the craziest tricks. There are also some specials like the challenge pit where you have to try to get your opponent in.

This place is really suitable for children of all ages. The different zones are perfectly marked, so that even the little ones can have fun, without being knocked over by the bigger kids.

Enjoy a relaxing Spa Day

Sometimes we just want things to be a lot more relaxed too, right? Fortunately, you don’t have to worry about that either, because you have a huge selection here. Skin care and facials are hugely in demand in Santo Domingo. And you’ll be amazed at how well they take care of you here.

Our recommendation is Kur Spa for a relaxing massage or facial treatment. Walking into this location makes you relax immediately. You have the entire spa to yourself and can choose for a skin treatment or massage in combination with sauna, milk bath, and so on.

If you are looking for a manicure, pedicure or brows treatment, we suggest you go to Dock’s Beauty Lounge. They remind me of those skin care boutiques you see in Hollywood movies about the US. They even have a bar (yes a bar!).
