Get to know the Wim Hof method

This week Ellen, creator of Time2Reconnect, had the pleasure of having a LIVE conversation with Tom Stijven, the very first Wim Hof instructor in Belgium. Tom is one of the experts who will work with you during our experience weekends to help you discover your new ‘you’. He does this by using breathology and the Wim Hof method. 

Wim Hof Method? 

The Wim Hof Method is a simple but powerful method based on three pillars: breathing, cold therapy and dedication. Its goal is to strengthen your immune system, sharpen your concentration and improve your mental well-being.

“If, out of your 25,000 daily breaths, you do at least 150 of them consciously, you will have a positive impact on your health, both physically and mentally.”

In our Western society we are able to exhaust ourselves to such an extent that the Wim Hof Technique enables us to meet our basic needs again. Eighty percent of our ailments are self-illnesses, the so-called “western society illnesses”. Wim Hof has combined wisdom from three thousand years of culture into very simple techniques. It’s all about breathing, cold confrontation and mindset. The breathing exercises are the basis for teaching your body to switch between action mode and rest mode every day, even if it’s only for fifteen minutes. 

HINT: End your shower ritual every day with a cold shower. It gives a huge boost to the cardiovascular system.

People live in constant fear. Fear of the past, fear of the future and all possible doomsday scenarios. To survive in the cold, you have to accept and learn to let go. The process of letting go is what we have a very difficult time with in our Western society. Self-care is unfortunately still a big taboo, while being in your power is so important for your health and happiness. Through the Wim Hof method you rediscover your own strength, what your body is capable of, instead of assuming what you think you are capable of. Because unfortunately there are so many ‘assumptions’ that we make and take for truth, that we impose immense limitations on ourselves.

There is no limit to the human potential!

Our minds are so strong and can handle so much, only we suppress these possibilities for ourselves. By embracing the cold, we rediscover our full potential.

We are constantly living on our throttle. We never hit the brakes. Even when we “relax,” we keep pushing. We are constantly doing damage to our bodies. By starting to train our cardiovascular system through the Wim Hof breathing exercises, we automatically learn to hit the brakes.

Being comfortable in the uncomfortable…

Accepting, letting go and discovering how strong your body is, is the most beautiful gift you can give yourself. You can literally think of your breathing as the remote control of your brain. Believe in yourself. Find the strength again and let go of what you cannot change.
